Understanding unwanted hair

Unwanted hair is one of those things that can feel incredibly personal, yet it's something almost everyone deals with. Hair growth patterns, thickness, and location are largely determined by factors completely outside our control, which can make it frustrating when you're spending time and energy trying to manage something that feels like it's working against you.

Hair growth is fundamentally controlled by hormones, genetics, and natural body processes. We are all born with all the hair follicles we will ever have throughout our lives, but various factors can influence how active these follicles become and what type of hair they produce.

01

What causes unwanted hair growth

  • Hormonal influences — androgens like testosterone affect everyone differently; even small hormonal fluctuations can trigger new growth or change fine hair into coarser hair
  • Genetics — determine your hair growth patterns and thickness
  • Medical conditions — PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) can cause unwanted hair growth on face, chest, and back due to hormone imbalances; thyroid disorders can also disrupt normal hair growth cycles
  • Life changes — puberty, pregnancy, menopause, or birth control changes can trigger new hair growth through hormonal fluctuations

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions, answered.

  1. 01 Does laser hair removal work on all hair colours and skin types? +

Our Candela dual-wavelength technology allows us to treat a much broader range of hair and skin types than older laser systems. The Alexandrite laser works exceptionally well on dark hair and lighter skin, while the Nd:YAG laser can safely treat darker skin tones. However, very light, grey, or white hair may not respond as well because these hair types contain less melanin for the laser to target.

  2. 02 How many treatments will I need? +

Typically, 6–8 sessions achieve considerable hair reduction for most people, though this varies based on several factors. Your hair growth cycle, hair colour and thickness, the area being treated, and your individual response to treatment all influence how many sessions you'll need. We space treatments 4–6 weeks apart to align with your natural hair growth cycles.

  3. 03 Are there any side effects? +

Side effects are generally minimal with our advanced Candela technology. You might experience some redness or mild swelling for a few hours after treatment, similar to mild sunburn. This typically resolves within 24 hours. Very rarely, people might experience temporary changes in skin pigmentation, but this is uncommon with proper treatment settings and aftercare.

  4. 04 When will I see results? +

You'll notice hair starting to fall out 7–14 days after each treatment. After your first treatment, you should see up to 50% reduction in hair growth in the treated area. The hair that does grow back will be finer, lighter, and grow more slowly. You'll see progressive improvement with each treatment.

  5. 05 What's the difference between laser hair removal and IPL? +

Laser hair removal uses focused, single-wavelength light that can be precisely controlled for depth and intensity. Our Candela lasers are true medical-grade lasers that deliver consistent, powerful energy to hair follicles. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses broad-spectrum light that's less focused and generally less effective for permanent hair reduction.

  6. 06 What should I do to prepare for treatment? +

Avoid sun exposure for 2–3 weeks before treatment and don't wax, pluck, or epilate for 4–6 weeks prior (shaving is fine and actually recommended). You should shave the treatment area 1–2 days before your appointment so the hair is short but still visible. Avoid any products containing retinoids or acids for a few days before treatment, and don't use fake tan or self-tanning products.
